The world is confronted with complex social and environmental issues that require system thinking and transdisciplinary problem-solving in order to find innovative and sustainable solutions. This course aims to provide students with experiential learning opportunity to acquire practical experience in social innovation management and entrepreneurship through internship. Students will work with a social enterprise or an organization that focuses on social innovation to develop their awareness in areas such as project management, stakeholder engagement, social impact assessment, and business model innovation.
The objectives of this course are fourfold: To help students (1) develop a good understanding of how social entrepreneurs and social enterprises develop solutions to social problems; (2) develop the analytical ability to examine the social and/or environmental impact of the innovations; (3) acquire a greater understanding of the complexity of the problems, and identify the uncertainties, challenges and opportunities facing the organizations; and (4) strengthen their skills in communication, teamwork, leadership, and transdisciplinary problem-solving.
