SOCI4075 Body, Self and Society (3 units)
Our Social worlds are made out of living, breathing, experiencing bodies. We are bodies just as much as we have bodies that we show, cover and shape. Sometimes they bend to our will, other times, they are recalcitrant and refuse to obey. This course proposes a sociological discussion of the body as a purview of biology and society. It presents sociological theories on the body as a project of self-making and as a subject of discipline and social control. We examine various sociological perspectives on the role of the body in social interaction, as well as processes of gendering the body and embodiment. The readings and the class and tutorial discussions focus on how processes of gendering and embodiment shape the making of selfhood and social relations.
