SOCI3045 China and Tourism (3 units)

Besides being an economic activity, tourism is also a complex and multifaceted phenomenon connecting with the dynamics of culture and society of hosts and guests. This course uses tourism as a point of departure to explore the social, cultural, political and economic aspects in China. It will explain and evaluate different anthropological and sociological theories and approaches to the study of tourism in China in relation to such issues as socio-cultural changes, political economy, tradition and modernity, heritage management and preservation, consumption, authenticity and commodification, development and sustainability, gender and sexism, modernization and globalization, and identity.
