MUSI3137 Immersive Creativity through Spatial Sound (3 units)
This course aims to provide an opportunity for students to study in-depth selected topics in technological innovations related to spatial sound and immersive audio technologies.
Through a historical and technical overview, students will further investigate the revolution of spatial audio from various aesthetical and technological perspectives, and via multiple interdisciplinary applications in contemporary music, sound arts, and the professional music industry.
The course is outlining the technicalities related to spatial audio, offering meticulous theorizing, practical demonstrations, software knowledge, and creative implementation in different multichannel, speaker configurations. Therefore, students get to experience sound immersion from different angles, forging while developing a critical view on this topic.
Starting from the Renaissance antiphony and leading to the 3D sound immersion of our times, the class will then guide students through experimental, standardized, and commercial approaches on spatial sound and will break down the aesthetical dimensions and technical challenges of each pathway. The aim is to outline the theoretical foundations and develop technical capacities for students’ personal practices in sound spatialisation at an advanced level.
