MUSI3115 Female and LGBTQ Artists in Music, Arts and Society (3 units)
Certain groups of people still get pushed towards the fringes of our society, for example, on the grounds of gender identity, ethnicity, religion, or socio-economic position. Moreover, despite the increasing number of female composers entering the field of classical music, they have been systematically omitted from the historical narrative, regardless of their successes and significance during their lifetime. Instead, the narrative mainly focuses on a few household names, such as Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn and Alma Mahler, who did not actually represent professional composers in their own right but were rather connected to a few male composers associated with the Western classical music mainstream. This course intends to shed some light on the female and queer artists and societal influencers intersectionally, representing various genders and sexual identities contributing to the history of arts, music and society as we know it today. On top of discussing the work of female and LGBT artists, the course topic will cover artists representing non-binary gender identities. The intention of the course is to amplify the voices that have been silenced for too long.
