This course introduces students to music and the mass media technologies. It aims to foster an understanding of the development of different media forms (phonography, radio, television, video, internet, and video games) in the production, distribution, and consumption of music in contemporary society. In addition to investigating popular music’s centrality in mass media, students will examine case studies of mediated music examples from historical, analytical, and cultural perspectives informed by media theories. By the end of the course, students will gain an understanding of issues related to different forms of mediated music and their impact on everyday life.
