MUSI1045 Introduction to Film Music (3 units)
- Medium of Instruction:
- English
This course introduces to students the historical, representational, technological, and economic aspects of film music. It explores why and how music has been important to the history of cinema, as manifested in the prominence of certain film composers (e.g. Max Steiner), film genres (e.g. musical films), film actors (e.g. Judy Garland), and to a lesser extent, film auteurs (e.g. Wong Kar Wai) and film industries (e.g. Bollywood). Through offering students the basic vocabularies and devices for film music analysis, it also aims to inspire students to reconsider film as an audiovisual medium that requires or even demands the act of listening.
