JOUR7350 Media and Communication in Greater China (3 units)

This course aims at expanding students' knowledge of the evolution of media and communication in Greater China as needed for the practice of international journalism. Students will study the history of media and communication in the region with a focus on mainland China and Hong Kong while gaining a deeper understanding of current China politics. Close examination of important events and major characteristics of Chinese news media will enable students to understand media’s impact on Chinese societies and individuals. Students will also examine international coverage of Greater China as a way to understand the journalistic opportunities and challenges of telling the China story, including the rise of China and its geopolitical implications. Analysis of the role of the news media in specific events will help students gain a profound understanding of the unique political, economic and social dynamics in the region.
