China Reporting is one of the most crucial and difficult areas for journalists to cover. This intensive course provides analytical tools and practical techniques for students to understand and report the rising power in-depth. This course can also be treated as a Pre-Job training for future China-Beat reporters for local media outlets. Therefore, students are required to study and decode first-handed information and official documents, then write up stories in a professional manner especially for local audience.
This course will acquaint students with important events in the PRC since its founding in 1949, with heavy focus on the changes and development since Xi Jinping, the General Secretary of CPC took office after the 18th Party Congress in 2012. Understanding of and ways to report the mechanism and operation of CPC, the gist of "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics", the social control system, the legal reform, the civil society and Beijing's Hong Kong policy constitute the meat of the courses. This is an elective course available to all Journalism Option students.
