JOUR2116 Finance and Economics for Journalists (3 units)

This course aims to introduce basic economic and financial knowledge to students for the development of an understanding of current economic issues and financial markets. Students are expected to critically analyse financial news in both global and local contexts while evaluating its impact on society and daily lives. It covers economic theories, including supply and demand, classical economics, laissez-faire capitalism and comparative advantage. Local economy, property and stock markets are some of the focuses of the course.
Students will explore the role of international financial media in Hong Kong and the importance of economic and financial news to citizens and journalists. The course will also teach the skills of reporting and writing various kind of financial and business news, from the budget, economic data, stock and property markets to company results.
