GAME3035 Transdisciplinary Theory of Game Design (3 units)
- Medium of Instruction:
- English
This course addresses the fundamental questions of playing games: why, how, when, with whom, where, and what. By using anthropology, ethnography, psychology, and sociology studies of games, gamers’ behaviour, and the sociocultural, economic and political mechanisms shaping the gaming industry and the market, the course will equip students with transcultural and transdisciplinary practical knowledge, training, and skills to understand the gamers’ behaviours, choices, and desires – what makes gamers tick – enabling them to apply these strategically when designing their own gameworlds.
Upon completing the course, students will be able to better understand the gamers’ behaviour, choices, interests, and motivations. They will be able to strategically approach game design, speedily respond to the changes and needs of the society, gaming industry and the market; follow the flows and circulation of popular, affective, and attractive content, and anticipate “the next big thing” in gaming.
