ENGL4135 Linguistic Typology and Language Change (3 units)

This course aims to acquaint students with the diversity of linguistic properties across languages and intrinsic changing nature of aspects of languages. It will provide students with the skills useful in analysing linguistic patterns and to develop students’ abilities in developing explanations for linguistic regularities in linguistic typology and language change. The course will cover the linguistic typology across human languages, the change of natural languages, the structural properties of English in relation to linguistic typology, and the structural properties of English as a result of historical changes.
