ENG 7760 Transmedia Storytelling (3 units)
This course aims to introduce students to storytelling across media, focusing on the history of textual transformations and the power of transmedia adaptations. Students analyse a set of core texts, examine different kinds of adaptations across media (including adding visual elements to storytelling through comics), process how interaction shapes a preset story in game media, analyse how user-generated content expands the textual universe through fan content, and ultimately analyse how texts can enjoy many lives and an afterlife through franchising and other media mixes. By the end of the class, students should not only appreciate how textual material can be given new life through adaptation but also critically discuss how different platforms and adaptations add something new to the text-world itself.
