Courses
BMSC2025 Microbiology and Immunology (3 units)
- Medium of Instruction:
- English
The aims of this course are (1) to introduce to the students the basic principles and concepts of medical microbiology, including the various classes of microorganisms that interact with humans; and (2) to provide students with a general introduction to immunology and its relevance to diseases.
Microbiology is the field of study that focuses on microorganisms, which play a crucial role in the breakdown and natural recycling of organic material in the environment. Some microbial species can cause disease by invading the tissues of the living organisms and producing harmful substances. The course will also cover parasites and other multicellular organisms that can contribute to the development of diseases.
The following aspects in Microbiology will be covered: (1) basic concept in microbiology; (2) diversity of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms; (3) prokaryotic cell structure and growth; (4) microorganism identification methods; (5) viruses, viroids, and prions; (6) bacterial and viral pathogenicity; (7) parasites
Immunology is a fundamental scientific discipline that focuses on the study of the immune system. The course will provide a comprehensive understanding of our immune system by covering its basic principles and demonstrating its relevance to overall health.
The following aspects in Immunology will be covered: (1) the anatomy and principle of the immune system; (2) innate immune system and adaptive immune system; (3) T cell biology; (4) B cell biology; (5) cytokines and chemokines; (6) disorders in immune system and immunotherapy for disease treatments.
