VART2606 Sculpture: 3D Technology for Sculpture (1.5 units)

Digital technology expands our understanding of additive sculpture techniques and allows new ways of expression and form making in this field. e.g. 3D scanning and printing technology is increasingly used in production as well as archiving three-dimensional works of visual arts.
This course focuses on utilising 3D scanning technology in conjunction with silicone mould making for the production of sculptural work. Departing from existing objects, students will learn how to use several 3D scanning techniques via scanning hardware technology to produce digital 3D files. Then 3D editing software will enable students to manipulate their scans and create new entities that expand and re-think the originally scanned objects both for a 3D environment such as 3D printing, and for 2D environments as used in laser cutting and plasma cutting. Finally, the newly created digital file will be 3D printed and derivates will be used for laser cutting.
All of AVA’s 2000-level courses focus on skill-based training, yet the project assignments within the courses nonetheless require students to also articulate artistic ideas and integrate different skills into a well-planned creative strategy.
This course will include training of relevant 3D software; prior knowledge of such software is not required but may turn out to be helpful in achieving the desired outcome.
