This course will examine the changing conditions of the three major social classes as a handle to understand the magnitude and meanings of modern economic reform.  It will study the changing life chances, social consciousness, and political orientations of the capitalists, workers, and villagers.  It will make use of both theoretical and ethnographic materials to render depth as well as generate interest in the discussion.
