Globalization greatly affects the socioeconomic-political context of health, shaping the understanding of health, social distribution of health and diseases, and delivery of health care. Today, health is acknowledged as a complex global issue, cutting across national boundaries. Many determinants of health operate at a global level; many national policies, social practices, and individual health behaviors are structured by global forces. This course adopts a sociological lens, while also drawing upon research findings from other academic disciplines, to critically examine how structural and cultural forces and major institutional players produce and reproduce health inequalities, and shape health care delivery in a globalizing world at the micro and macro levels. Selected global health issues will be discussed with case studies.
