MUSI3095 Listening to Chinese Music (3 units)
This course is a concise survey that deploys listening as a means to help students understand the history, aesthetics, and creative practices of Chinese music. It covers a wide array of vocal and instrumental works/genres/styles/traditions ranging from qin (seven-string zither) music and kunqu opera to modern Chinese orchestral music and avant-garde music composition in Western idioms. It is intended for providing students the basic concepts of Chinese music. It also aims to facilitate students to understand Chinese culture through the lens of Chinese music. No prior knowledge of Chinese studies is required. All assigned reading materials are in English; proficiency in Chinese language is not necessary.
