This course introduces students to iconic figures of Chinese popular music from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan with a focus on the music that each of these figures represents. It aims to familiarize students with the musical features and sociocultural contexts of these iconic figures’ songs. In addition, it also examines these key figures’ performances across media platforms, on stage, TV, YouTube, and other new media channels, recorded and live, through which to look into issues of identity, gender, and politics. Furthermore, this course encourages students to be engaged with the study of mass media, celebrity culture, idol worship, and fan movements as additional ways to understand music production and consumption.
