With vast amounts of data now openly accessible online and the development of infographic technologies to visualize data, data journalism – the use of numerical data in the production and distribution of news – has become a growing field of rising importance. The aim of the course is to examine data journalism at its core through case studies and hands-on practice of data skills through tools such as Microsoft Excel, Google sheets, OpenRefine, and Tableau. Students will learn how to conceptualize, design, visualize, and produce data-driven news stories.
