GAME3047 Generative AI in Creative Practices (3 units)
Generative AI is one of the many types of Artificial Intelligence used to create various data, including images, videos, and 3D models. GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is the most recent example, with ChatGPT creating original texts based on the existing data available on the Internet. Generative AI transforms how we communicate (transfer data) amongst ourselves and how we interact with computers, media, and digital technologies – and ultimately ourselves. It is already revolutionizing how we create digital media and, equally importantly, how we think, understand, feel, and know the world.
This course will introduce students to the core concepts and fundamental knowledge of Generative AI – its present condition, history, and future possibilities. By using a transdisciplinary approach, a wide variety of theoretical perspectives and practices will be used to develop new knowledge of Generative AI. This course includes the application and use of Generative AI to enable computers to paint, write, compose music, and play video games. Students will learn the basic knowledge of deep learning and how it can be used to create images, text, music, and video games. More importantly, students will research why – how we came to this point, why humanity’s future is Generative AI, and the potential ethical, social, and practical issues of using Generative AI. While acquiring hands-on skills in using Generative AI tools to create different types of digital media, including games and animation, students will also learn to understand Generative AI and its applications in everyday life critically.
