ENGL4116 Language and Power (3 units)
- Medium of Instruction:
- English
In this course we will focus on the ways in which language intersects with the social, political, and cultural aspects of power. Key theoretical concepts and methods of analysis will be introduced, centred on topics such as gender, race, and institutions, the power of social media and discourses of "post truth". Students will develop an in-depth understanding of contemporary issues of language and power through active reading, discussion, and hands-on analytical tasks, as well as through an extended research and analysis exercise.
