ENGL3115 Studying Hong Kong Through the Lens of Language (3 units)
- Medium of Instruction:
- English
This course aims to give students of different backgrounds a wider perspective on how Hong Kong can be studied from a linguistic perspective. The language situation in Hong Kong is defined by how language is used in different domains including work, education, as well as government and society; it is important to be aware of the complexities underlying certain kinds of linguistic choice. Starting from the language situation in the colonial period of Hong Kong, this course documents the important changes to this language situation, and attempts to account for how these changes identify Hong Kong as a unique place and reflect the identity of people in Hong Kong as Hong Kongers. The course will equip students with the analytical tools and background knowledge that is necessary to understand the changing linguistic profile in Hong Kong, and the development of various language-related issues in Hong Kong society.
