COMM7910 Health Communication (3 units)
This course aims to introduce fundamental concepts and theories in health communication studies and their application to understanding of health-related processes at individual, organizational, and social levels. Various topics will be covered, including risk communication, family communication, healthcare provider and organizational communication, and public health interventions. Additionally, this course intends to teach students about how health communication theories and practice interact to enhance the effectiveness of policies, interventions, and campaigns. It will introduce a diverse set of approaches, including campaign planning, message designing, and media representation and culture analyses. Students will have opportunities to develop theoretically informed and empirically tested communication campaigns and health interventions in different scenarios. By the end of the course, students will have a commend of major agendas in health communication studies and gain practical skills that could benefit their future career and everyday life.
