The purpose of Chinese Medicinal Formulae is to teach the students, through classic teaching and discussion to deliver: (1) the therapeutic principals and formulation strategy of Chinese Medicine prescription; (2) the composition, function and indications of formula; (3) the strategies and methods of formulating a formula; and (4) how these formulas in the clinical practice are used. The formulae in the list of Guideline of Hong Kong Chinese medicine practitioner Registration Examination will be referred as the key component in this course.
方劑是中醫藥物學的主體，是中醫學最重要的專業科目之一。方劑是指藥物按一定的規矩和方法所組成者（用術語“配伍”表達。配伍原則、配伍方法）。方劑學即是關於方劑配伍的學問。但實際上，方劑的配伍理論問題遠未揭秘，使本課程只能以方劑（而不是方劑學）爲主要內容。因此特點，本門課程的教學目的設置爲：以基礎方、常用有效方、學術特色方等三類方的知識（包括組成、用量、用法、主治功用、配伍、及常用加减）爲主體。課程目的主要在這些知識的理解與記憶，輔以適當的運用訓練。其中功用、主治僅作基礎性內容的介紹，深入理解則留待後續臨床各科的”昇級”。
