MUSI2055 Western Music (3 units)

This course provides a broad survey of Western art music from the antiquity to the present. It introduces a salient repertoire of Western music situated in socio-political and cultural contexts. It emphasizes on students’ mastering musical terms, genre concepts, and listening and analytical skills so as to be able to articulate stylistic features of musical works from different historical periods. Students are expected to also develop an understanding of the trajectory of Western music, to be able to talk and write about music intelligently, and to apply the sonic features of such a repertoire of music creatively.
