This is an advanced feature writing class that dives deep into the world of food reporting and writing and its intersection with culture. Students will explore different genres of food journalism, including writing a restaurant review, and go into the field to conduct interviews in order to tell the stories of the peoples shaping the food industry in Hong Kong. In order to write about a variety of global cuisines and the cultural traditions behind them, students will also expand their palate and knowledge of the professional world of food through food tastings, research, analyses and reflection on their experiences. The study of longform storytelling techniques will help students apply course material to a final enterprise story on a food issue or trend. This is a class for students who love food, who aren't afraid to try new things and who are interested in going beyond Instagram-style posts to tell compelling and meaningful stories about the people and culture behind the food we eat.
