This course consists of two parts. Part One introduces the important movements within documentary film history and critically examines basic concepts and issues. Students will study the thematic concerns and stylistic approaches of selected films, filmmakers, and film movements as well as the historical contexts from which they emerged. Part Two introduces a new documentary mode (Social Action Mode) and the rise of independent documentary in Hong Kong after 2000 and particularly in the Umbrella Movement and Anti-amendment of Extradition Bill Movement which may challenge the idea about documentary and calls for our special attention.
