To make ceramics, we construct forms from clay; after form is created, we enrich the surface by some other techniques. Therefore, ceramists need to manipulate and balance both form and surface. Ceramics offer a wide range of surface treatments to meet individual ceramist’s unique need for his/her intended expression or effect.
This is a skill course designed to teach students various ceramics surface treatment techniques from bare clay decoration to glazing. It establishes a practical basis for addressing perceptual and aesthetic concerns as related to the intertwining of form and surface. Students will be encouraged to develop their own means of personal expression while working through assignments based on different techniques and skills.
