This course aims to introduce students to China’s environmental and development challenges in the context of ongoing social, economic, and political transformation. Students will engage with key theoretical debates in China studies, development studies and environmental studies to help them understand the complexities of China’s sustainable development. The course covers two sets of topics: (1) China’s socio-economic development and transition (China under Mao, economic reform, urbanisation, migration, inequality, poverty alleviation, rural development, and population policy); and (2) China’s environment challenges and solutions (air and soil pollution, water management, forest management, and energy and climate change).
