ERMT3805 Sustainable Community Energy Planning (3 units)

Energy is not only essential to economic and social development but also links to environmental issues such as air pollution, destruction of ecosystem, and anthropogenic climate change. This course aims to enhance students' understanding of the principles of energy production and consumption in the context of emerging global and local challenges, and encourage students to think critically about the future of energy development from a global perspective. This course adopts an interdisciplinary approach consisting of different perspectives: technological, environmental, social, economic, legal, and policy. This course features project-based learning where students work in teams to develop a community energy development plan that includes: (1) current energy sources available in the region, (2) the technical and economic feasibility of each source, (3) the environmental impact of extraction, production, and use of the energy sources, (4) the identification of objectives and goals having regard to available resources and challenges; and (5) strategies to achieve the desired objectives and goals.
