This course is designed to familiarize students with knowledge of the initials, the finals and the tones of the Chinese language in its various stages of development, so that they may be able to comprehend historical phonology through the schemes of the language. Theory and practice should be equally emphasised to equip students not only with the knowledge of phonology, but also with the ability to study and appreciate classical literature more intelligently.
本科目旨在指導學生學習漢語各個時期的聲、韻、調系統及其發展的規律，以提高閱讀古書和研究古典文學、文獻的能力，並為在漢語語言學方面的進一步研究，奠定良好的基礎。
