VART2476 Additive Sculpture: Bronze Casting (1.5 units)
- VART1006 Visual Arts Practice II or any GE-courses offered by AVA
- VART2475 Additive Sculpture: Clay and Plaster
- Medium of Instruction:
Bronze casting describes the technique of solidifying molten copper alloy in a mould, with the shape of the cast object determined by the negative cavity of this mould. The discovery of this process marked a significant step in human evolution, as it required complex and sophisticated social structures to accommodate the production. It enabled humans to produce both tools and artefacts from a material that cannot be found in larger quantities as a raw resource.
This course will introduce students to the process of lost wax casting, from the design and production of a wax model to the production of a ceramic shell that results in the negative mould needed to produce the cast.
The course aims to provide students with the fundamental elements of complex industrial processes and will enable the understanding of the creative opportunities the technology entails.
