TRAN3007 Culture and Translation (3 units)

This course introduces students to the relation between culture and translation. It helps students develop an awareness of the cultural dimensions of translating by studying texts that are rich in cultural elements, and the translations of these texts. It highlights how extra-textual forces such as ideology can influence the way a text is translated and how a translator has to learn to negotiate with those forces. Upon completion of this course, students will appreciate better their role and responsibility as a cultural mediator.
