GTSC2046 The Press and Public Opinion in China: Past, Present and Future (3 units)

This course provides a broad introduction on the emergence and development of press in China. Print technology was applied to practices of everyday life in China—from commerce, politics, government, family, ritual, religion, language, to the press. This course outlines the invention and development of printing and traces the history of the press in China. It also explores how public opinion has been shaped by the country’s intellectuals since the 19th century, and how big data nowadays reveals the impact of the new media. In particular, the course analyses the impact of China's tightening censorship amidst a boom in the popularity of social media and the Internet. Current events relating to the press and public opinion in China are analysed regarding their historical, theoretical and structural origins. When covering the development of the press issues in China, this course also reviews the development of similar issues in other countries and cultures. Students will be equipped with a thorough understanding of the rise of the press and public opinion in China.
