GTSC2027 Mathematics on the Battlefields (3 units)

This course covers a wide range of historical events and mathematical concepts: From methods that simulate the casualty rate of soldiers in the American Civil War, to techniques applied in breaking German encryption systems in the World War II. This course tells the stories of wars and conflicts in which mathematics plays an important role, and introduces the underlying mathematical principles and ideas. It discusses how these military technologies were made available to the public, and hence influenced and shaped our daily life today. This course has no pre-requisite on subjects of mathematics and history, and hence is suitable for students of any academic background.
