GTSC2026 How Technology Shakes Up Our Society (3 units)

This course guides students into critical thinking and self-education about the past, the present, and the future of science and technology. Students will analyse the social, political, economic, and cultural factors of technological development in a global context to determine their positive and negative effects. This course also promotes awareness of technological development, and provides students with an understanding of the key breakthroughs in technological development and their impacts on the quality of human living. This course begins with a discussion of global warming and the long-lasting effects of the Industrial Revolution on energy choices today. Then, focus on today’s so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution and examine the issues surrounding big data and AI. Finally, review the ways in which technology changes how people approach politics, poverty, and health issues.
