GTCU2046 The Synergy of Chinese Calligraphy and Literature as Self-Expression (3 units)

This course introduces the ways to appreciate Chinese calligraphy from traditional Chinese culture to contemporary world. In terms of the concept of creativity via the history and social functions of Chinese calligraphy, the integration between calligraphy and other art forms such as Chinese painting, performance art and dance, and representations of calligraphy in contemporary life such as the ubiquitous shop signage, neon signage, couplets and plaques embedded in historic buildings.
This course also examines the synergy among calligraphy, literature and the notion of self-expression through observations and analysis of calligraphic works by major calligraphers. This will be followed by a study of techniques in masterpieces by major calligraphers. Students will be guided to develop their own calligraphic skills and creative strategies of expressing their own personal ideas through making calligraphic works. It allows the students to practice calligraphy as self-cultivation and be part of a healthy lifestyle.
