GTCU2015 Creativity and Madness (3 units)
- Medium of Instruction:
- English
This course aims to investigate different ideas on what constitutes creative genius and madness and how they are related to each other. Both creative genius and madness can be viewed as transgressions against prevailing cultural conventions of a certain society in a particular time period. Through a critical discussion of the relationship between artistic creativity and madness from cross-cultural, interdisciplinary perspectives, students will obtain a broad understanding of the cultural underpinnings, different definitions of and the relationship between creativity and madness. The ultimate question to answer in this course will be: is there a state of creativity that can transcend particular cultural constraints and be recognized as a standard for all times?
