This course aims at discussing the role of history in understanding the making of nowadays Hong Kong. The formula for Hong Kong is "one country, two systems". Why and how is one country relevant? Moreover, why and how are the two systems? What were the salient features of the British colonial system between 1841 and 1997? What has made Hong Kong bicultural? What did "laissez-faire" mean to the business sector and ordinary people in Hong Kong under different historical periods?
Students will be empowered to make a journey through the voices of Hong Kong people, and acquainted with the historical and cultural achievements of Hong Kong in relation to China and the world. In doing so, they can form educated opinions about the place to which they cultivate their sense of belonging.
