GFHC1035 Religion, Philosophy and the Rise of Modern Science (3 units)
- Medium of Instruction:
- English
The rise of modern science has greatly influenced the development of human civilization. This course will look at the complicated factors that both contributed to and hindered its rise, in particular religious and philosophical views in interaction with social, cultural and political developments, and how its rise in turn shaped these views. This course starts with an examination of the model which posits necessary conflicts between science and religion. We then provide a journey through history, tracing the religious and philosophical ideas relating to the rise of modern science and examine how historical events have shaped these ideas, influenced religious and scientific institutions and impacted scientific endeavours and creations.
