Remote sensing is defined as the science of acquiring information about material objects without being in touch with them. These measurements are possible because sensors or instruments are designed to measure the reflected light from earth objects. Each kind of earth material has its own spectral characteristics, which enable us to discern the objects from their intermixed background. This course introduces students the basic concepts and skills of remote sensing technology. The principle of remote sensing is introduced first, followed by a review of available remote sensing systems including airborne and space-borne platform and sensors. Techniques of image interpretation and computer processing of digital satellite images are also practised.
