Justice is a moral idea that we all appeal to in times of conflicts. It is therefore significant to review critically the ideas of justice behind. This course introduces students to some major philosophical theories of justice, such as utilitarianism, libertarianism, contractarianism, communitarianism and socialism. Discussions include justification of the state, distribution of liberty and political rights as well as social and economic resources, poverty, justification of private property and free market, inequality due to natural and social circumstances, the role of the community, China and Hong Kong relations, equal opportunities, issues in development, environmental protection, race, gender and sexual discrimination, etc. Exact topics may vary from time to time.
