ENGL4106 Literary Journalism (3 units)
Literary Journalism provides a forum within which to explore post-1960s avant-gardist and genre-bending journalistic texts, from shorter pieces to novel-length ones to cinematic docu-and mockumentary. We will decipher and decode some groundbreaking reportage-based texts, including shorter pieces, a novella, two novels, and a feature-length documentary so as to emphasise how each of these is at once what it is and not what it is. Each of the texts we shall examine, and each of the texts we will write, will meditate upon, and mediate the particular cultural conditions of, the author-journalist’s role in delivering and repackaging and critiquing—and (re)creating—the newsworthy.
