CRWG4215 Film Theory and Criticism (3 units)

This course aims to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of major film theories and critical approaches to the cinema. Theoretical concepts including formalism, auteur theory, representation and ideology, genre theory and the politics of the cinema are selected and critically examined through close reading, class discussion, film viewing, written assignments and presentations. Students are encouraged to develop their viewpoints and arguments and written skills through analyzing filmic texts alongside critical thoughts derived from these film theories.
