Wearables – that is artefacts worn on the human body – strongly depend on the use of flexible sheet materials; most commonly these would be textiles and fabrics of various kinds, but other alternative materials such as paper, plastics or even metal mesh have been successfully applied to creating wearables objects also.
It is the aim of this course to introduce students to materials, processes and techniques to appropriate materials for the purpose of creating wearables, in particular through various dyeing and printing techniques.
Building on to these skills, through studio exercises, student research and studio practice the students are invited to explore various approaches, concepts and materials to develop new designs that can then be further applied for the creation of wearable artefacts. The outcome of this course – in difference to other courses – will therefore not be a “final product”, but the “raw material” to be used potentially in another course context.
