ORGC3016 Health Communication (3 units)

- COMM2006 Communication Theory (Communication Studies) and COMM2007 Communication Research Method (Communication Studies)
This course provides an introduction of communication within and between health institutions and various agencies, and how these institutions and agencies can affect health culture and people’s (or patients’) perceptions and behaviours in health. This course will examine different forms of communication in health settings, ranging from the micro interpersonal communication (between and among healthcare workers and patients), to more macro forms of communication within and among different health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), government health institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), professional bodies, etc. These different discourses can create health knowledge and influence people’s health beliefs, perceptions, and behaviours. With an overview of the public health theories, students will also learn to use different media for effective dissemination of health messages and develop public health campaign.
