Music exists in social contexts, within which people create, perform, perceive, and react to it. These activities are dependent on specific places and times, and on the broader historical and cultural contexts of musical behaviour. This course is dedicated to the study of history, civilizations, and music cultures, with a particular focus on social, cultural, and economic organizations. The overall aim of this course is to survey the development of various Western and non-Western civilizations and the ways in which music cultures translate, transform, and transcend the world around them. “Music, Society and Culture” surveys the relationships between society, culture, and music genres by examining (1) musical production, (2) content, and (3) reception and use. This course addresses changes in and the significance of music styles and music-making, and the functions of art music, popular music, and other world music in society. Specific topics explored include the practice and value of selected forms of ethnic music and indigenous music; music identities; music, power, and politics; music and gender; music and creativity; the construction of music markets; the globalization of music production; and production and reproduction technologies.
