GCVM1036 Human Rights in a Multicultural World (3 units)

This course will help students reflect on the moral beliefs and practices related to the idea of human rights from the perspectives of major philosophical and religious traditions in the contemporary multicultural world. First, the basic concepts of rights will be explained and the historical development of these ideas traced briefly. Then the perspectives of different philosophical traditions (such as deontology and utilitarianism) on human rights will be expounded. Moreover, both western and non-western religious views (such as Christianity and Confucianism) on human rights will be introduced. Finally, this course will help students identify, understand and reflect on ethical issues such as the ethical foundation of rights, the scope of rights, the balance or tension between individual rights and good society, and conflicts between different kinds of human rights.
