There is a growing trend in mainstream medicine to shift the model of disease from biomedicine into a biopsychosocial paradigm. Alongside with this trend emerges lifestyle medicine, a branch of medicine dealing with research, prevention and treatment of disorders caused by lifestyle factors such as nutrition, physical inactivity, and chronic stress. On the other hand, for over 2000 years Chinese medicine has emphasized on health cultivation for the prevention of diseases and promotion of longevity. The aim of this course is to educate students about how lifestyles impact health and disease. Through examining and comparing the theoretical frameworks and practices of health cultivation of Chinese medicine and lifestyle medicine from historical and cultural perspectives, students will gain an understanding of how lifestyle affects health and disease in the modern society. The benefits of traditional health cultivation methods for modern man are examined. Finally, students will carry out experiential learning through practicing health cultivation methods and tracking their own health.
